First Fridays is a social group that meets on the first Friday of each month.
Our usual meeting time is 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
There is no admission charge.
First Fridays is a social support group featuring potluck dinners and social conversation.
Sometimes there is a program on matters that concern or entertain.
The main part of the evening is meeting and talking with other gay people who live in the Yakima area.
The group features outside activities apart from the main meeting. We have a social committee and a program committee to coordinate topics of discussion and outside activities. Volunteers are welcomed to participate in the committees and everyone's input is welcome.
History
The group began in February of 1999 with three men who thought it would be a good idea to get together monthly for a social occasion. They spread the word to their gay and lesbian friends and started planning potlucks and picnics for the Friday event. This was especially successful during the past summer, with turnouts from 30 to 40 people.
Who is there
Although mostly composed of gay men, the group welcomes lesbians and bi's. Although straight friends are welcome, this is mostly an opportunity for us to get together amongst ourselves, talk about things that matter to us and provide support for one another. All ages welcome.
What it's for
First Fridays has the feel of a mutual support group, where we share our interests, problems, experiences, solutions, and the stories of our lives. It is also a great place to meet other gay people in the area, as well as maintaining contact with one another through our otherwise hectic lives. At least once a month.
Where it's at
Our meeting place varies from month to month. During the summer, we often have potluck picnic meetings in one of the Yakima area parks.
What it is
Recently First Fridays has become (or will become) a nonprofit organization. This will enable us to be eligible for funding as a support group and to hold our own fundraisers. With this status, and with these funds, we plan to offer greater support to gays and lesbians in the Yakima Valley at a personal level, to secure a home base that allows potlucks, and sponsor lectures and educational forums in addition to our informal social gatherings.
